MAY 2012 MEDINA QUILTERS NEWSLETTER

PROGRAM: NEEDLE CASE WITH EMBELISHMENTS BY JOYCE KENNEDY

MONDAY, MAY 21 6:30 PM

MEDINA COMMUNITY LIBRARY

HOSTESSES: DONNA A, LINDA B, GAYLE P & JULIE S

APRIL MEETING NOTES:

Lu asked if the group would donate a quilt for Relay for Life next year. We have a number of donation quilts in progress and the group agreed this would be a good community activity to support. Edie reported that the Boys and Girls Club would appreciate a quilt donation to use as a fundraiser. Further discussion of completion and disposition  of donation quilts was planned for the next meeting.

Joyce gave a report on the Study Group Leadership Meeting with Jana.  Several changes were agreed upon to make the groups more fun and less work.

1. The Study Groups will change from a calendar year to fiscal year for officers terms and annual report of activities.

2. The October agent program (Jana’s program) will be combined with the achievement luncheon. The luncheon will be a simpler event without decorations and door prizes. This year the luncheon will be at the Tarpley Community Center (aka” schoolhouse) on October 24th. Jana will arrange a caterer and invite the guests. This change was a result of our discussion of the difficulty scheduling the luncheon in December or January as in past years. The change will help Jana as it will no longer interfere with stock show preparations and will help us when it is our turn to “hostess” by being at a prettier time of the year and not requiring food preparation, etc. The other study groups were very much in agreement with these changes.

3. The Study Groups will continue to hold their annual Spring Fling pot luck picnic in May–this year on May 4th in Mansfield Park.

Michele announced that she will have boxes of free non-quilting fabrics at her shop for members who may want to use them for crafts, etc.  She is spring cleaning at her home to make room for things she enjoys doing.

Edie reminded everyone that the Intro to Art Quilt class will be on Saturday, May 19th at the Library. Anita Crane from Kerrville Quilt Guild will help participants to translate an image into a small quilted object. The class is free, open to all members who are interested and will start at 10am. A supply list has been e-mailed to all members on the e-mail list.

SHOW & TELL:

Dinah brought a traditional Snails Trail quilt that she had completed: and Michele brought a modern fabric strip quilt that she has completed for her shop to showcase fabrics and long arm quilting options. The result was a quilt with a back as interesting as the front.

Sandi brought a “Work-in-Progress” quilt that she intends to handquilt with hand embroidery embellishments. She wanted us to see that, with help from Dinah, she has learned to do really nice mitered corners.

Michele has completed quilting on Lu’s heartfelt thank you quilt and it only needs binding so it can go home to Lu for keeps.

Loretta has completed what she calls a “simple” small quilt from some charm packs that were a gift.

The evening closed with a program by Edie on using beads to add color and sparkle to quilted items. Eveyone had a small block to embellish and there was lots of laughter as beads were chased around the tables.

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, APRIL 16TH
6:30 PM
MEDINA COMMUNITY LIBRARY

PROGRAM: BEAD EMBELLISHMENT FOR QUILTED ITEMS by Edie Jessup
Edie will bring an assortment of beads, thread, etc. but if you have an item and would like to try adding some beads please bring it along with your scissors and basic sewing supplies.

PROGRAM NOTES FROM THE MARCH MEETING

Stormy weather was threatened but we still had a good turn-out of intrepid quilters. We listened for the tornado warning siren but managed to have lots of fun at the same time.  There was discussion of future programs. Edie reported that Anita C. from the Kerrville Quilt Guild will present a program on creating an art quilt from a photo or picture image. This will be a Saturday program and several members expressed interest.  Joyce will follow-up with Myrna for a Saturday program in the fall on machine quilting. With help from Randy and the library computer/projector, we saw pictures of many beautiful quilts from the Dallas quilt show while we visited and worked on our Sit-n-Sew projects. The refreshments were yummy and there was plenty of time for Show and Tell. Gail was working on really cute skirts for her grandaughters.

Janet brought a crochet baby sweater she has just completed.

and a beautiful quilt made with machine embroidered antique cars. She pieced the blocks using the exploding pineapple pattern.

Sherry carried a cute bag made in the twister pattern  and showed us a Block of the month she completed. The design is by Elaine Hutchinson and uses paper piecing to capture the intricate design.

Sandi had finished the crazy quilt she designed using scraps from  gingham shirts she made for her husband in years past. The only new fabric she purchased for the quilt was the yellow sashing and black border pieces to make the quilt large enough for a king size bed.

Dinah brought a beautiful Irish Chain watercolor quilt she had made for her daughter. The machine  quilting was done by Michele with thread selected to complement the colors in the quilt.

Loreta wraped up the show-n-tell with a gingham apron made by her mother.  Several members could remember doing similar gingham work when learning to sew, but none with such intricate embellishment.  The meeting closed and everyone was able to make it home before the beautiful and much needed rain arrived. Thank you to Sandi for taking notes to help me with this newsletter and my apologies for any errors or omisions. Edie

MARCH 2012 NEWSLETTER

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, MARCH 19TH
Medina Community Library
6:30 PM

PROGRAM: SIT-N-SEW (bring a project you are working on or ideas to discuss with members)
Basic quilting introduction by Joyce and Edie. If you are new to quilting, we will demonstrate basic skills. If you have rotary cutter and mat, bring it with you along with some fabric to play with. Bring your questions.
HOSTESS: All Members bring something yummy to share at snack time.

February Meeting Notes:

Girl Scouts brought cookies to sell prior to the meeting.  Their sales had been down due to cold and damp weekend weather. Generous quilters found lots of tasty cookies to buy and the girls send a big thank you to all.

New Extension Study Group booklets were handed out along with a schedule for 2012 programs.  Members were asked to give a show of interest for two possible Saturday programs.  Anita C will cover the process for turning an image, photo or other picture, into a fabulous fabric creation. The result will be a small “art” quilt but the emphasis will be on the process for you to apply to future projects. Anita will help us to “throw away all thoughts of real precision, relax and just  enjoy the making of something truly original.” Anita is a member of the Kerrville Quilt Guild and there will be no cost for her program other than your supplies.  The second program would be by Myrna who did a wonderful Saturday program for us two years ago on Machine Quilting. Myrna is a professional who teaches in the area and would review machine quilting techniques as requested by several members but also bring some new ideas. There would be a charge of $20 for her program. Time and further details will be coming soon so you can sign up and mark your calendars.

Susan, our newsletter  person, has moved to Austin. Edie will do the newsletter for now, but hopes someone in the group would like to take over this project.  Edie will help you to get started and fill in if you cannot make a meeting. It is a great way to add to your computer skills.

We had preliminary discussion of a repeat of our Quilt Festival in the Library. The group agreed to go ahead with this project with a few changes. The event would be shortened to two weekends and the week between with an opening night event on the first Friday. That would be 10 days. We would display a smaller number of quilts so that they could be better viewed by visitors and only quilts belonging to members of the Medina Quilters would be included. Linda S volunteered to be our liaison with the library and Susan has said she will help with publicity  since much of that can be done with her computer. We will be talking about committees and activities at future meetings so bring your ideas.

Joyce reminded us to mark our calendars for the Texas Shop Hop, Sept. 23, 2012.
We had a great group with lots of Show & Tell. Tammy was able to come to show several of her projects.

She had made quilts for children who had lost their home in the Bastrop fire. They came to our meeting with their mom to receive their quilts and add some tears and smiles to our group.

Nicki brought the quilt top she pieced for Lu from the hearts appliqued and autographed by members. Michele will quilt this for us.

Nicki added all the beautiful sashing and borders to our blocks to make the quilt even more special.

Jan T from Minnesota brought two of her quilts–”Jackie’s Garden” and a quilt she made from squares found at a resale shop.

Margaret shared a pillow she has made to show and preserve a pineapple crochet piece made by her mother.

And Sherry brought an applique block from a class she is taking on a new technique that she says is wonderful and easier than some techniques she has tried in the past.   New member Debbie has some blocks made by residents where she works. They are to be made into a quilt, quilted by Michele, and donated as a fundraiser for the Susan B. Konen cancer program.  She also had some blocks donated by a resident’s family member and asked for group ideas on how to put them together.  We hope she will bring them back for further discussion at our next meeting.

Jane, our thrift store- to- quilt specialist brought several of her latest recycle-reuse finds/creations.

Edie brought “Rosalinda” which is completed at last.  The art quilt designed by Elda and quilted by Elda, Edie and Michele will be on display at Michele’s shop for a while.

Michele then gave us a wonderful program on new tools and gadgets for quilters.  We had a chance to try some of them out and many of us started adding items to our wish list. Thank you Michele for a great program.

MEDINA QUILTERS NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012

NEXT MEETING:    JANUARY 16, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Medina Community Library

PROGRAM: Program planning session for 2012

SNACKS BY: LoReta, Susan and Julie (for January 16th meeting)

Note:  Special Meeting on January 9th, at 6:00 pm at the Library for those who wish to participate in the planning for the District luncheon.  The planning meeting will cover, setup, takedown, food and anything else we will need to accomplish to make the Appreciation Luncheon fun.  This should take us about 1 hour.

December Meeting Recap

We all enjoyed the yummy snacks that were furnished.  Many thanks to all who brought food.

Lu led a short discussion on the group’s community service projects for 2011.  We worked for a good portion of the year on planning and executing the quilt exhibit and numerous quilt-related demonstrations in the month of September.  Attendance was estimated at 275-300, about 70% of the visitors coming from Bandera Co, 14% from Kerr Co and San Antonio, 12% from other parts of TX and 5% from out of state (or unknown locations).

Lu passed around the roster for final updates to names and other personal info.  Please inform Susan W of future updates to your info so that we can stay in touch with you.

Lu reminds all of us to put on our thinking caps for recommendations for 2012 programs.  If you or you know someone who can teach a skill or present a program that would be of interest to the group—be sure to bring your ideas!!

The January district luncheon for January 21st was discussed.  It was decided that we would furnish 5-6 soups, breads, a broccoli salad and desserts for the luncheon.  A special meeting will be held on January 9th at 6:00 pm at the Library for those who wish to participate in food and decorations planning for this event.  It was decided that the luncheon will be priced at $10 per attendee, including our members. See the poster for this event below.  Bring payment for the luncheon if you plan to attend!!

Nickie sends a reminder to all who are working on the applique hearts to complete them and bring them to the January 16th meeting!

Poster for the January 21st Luncheon

Lu was presented with a collection of appliqued heart blocks as a gift in recognition of her leadership of the group.  Lu mentioned that she will remain through the transition period of January.

Gifts were passed right, then left, then right, right, etc. until the end of the story read by Edie—-and all were opened!  Many quilting-related items were unwrapped, as well as other fun items.  No photos with this newsletter—-they could not be inserted this time….  :-(

Medina Quilters December Newsletter

MEDINA QUILTERS DECEMBER 2011 NEWSLETTER

Next meeting:  Christmas Party at the Library, December 12th at 6:30 pm

What to Bring:  Yourself, a snack to share and a gift to exchange

BE THERE OR YOU’LL MISS ALL THE FUN!!

At the November meeting, we covered a lot of business, had a very informative program and fun show and share.

Lu mentioned that the district event will be scheduled for a date in January, and that our Christmas party will be held at the library on December 12th at the library at 6:30 pm.  Bring a gift valued about $10 and a dish to share.

Nickie brought lots of needles loaded with silk thread and gave instructions to help get beginners started and those with experience additional hints on the skills of appliqué.  Remember to bring your appliquéd hearts with your name signed or stitched on the muslin block to the December meeting.  Nickie also brought a sampling of her projects where she used appliqué.  What inspiration!  Thanks, Nickie, for your great program!

Edie suggested that we start thinking about the types of programs we’d like to have in 2012.  She mentioned that a friend who is part of the Kerrville guild said that several of their members have skills that they would be willing to share in programs for our group.  If Edie can let them know what we’re interested in learning, her friend will connect us to the appropriate guild member to line up a program.  Let Edie know what kinds of programs you’d like to have in 2012.

Another item discussed was the making of donation quilts and appropriate organizations as recipients.  Members picked up blocks featuring Sunbonnet Sue pattern that were lacking blanket stitch edging.

Susan mentioned that three books—Lone Star Quilts, Volumes I, II and III are now available at the library.  These books were written by Karoline Bresenhan and Nancy Puentes, who coordinate the annual International Quilt Festival in Houston and own the new  Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange.

Here’s the info about Jane Kelly’s Open House:

MEDINA QUILTERS NEWSLETTER FOR NOVEMBER 2011

NEXT MEETING AT THE MEDINA COMMUNITY LIBRARY ON MONDAY, NOV. 21ST AT 6:30 PM

PROGRAM:  NICKIE WILL PRESENT A PROGRAM ON APPLIQUÉ

SNACKS BY:  Dinah Keeley, Donna Payne, George Ann Aycock, Lynn Lewis

MINUTES FOR 10-17

New members:  Bobby Smelly and Chris Wilks —-Welcome!!

Jana Osburne spoke on “Dining at the Dollar Store”.  She gave a handout that she prepared comparing and contrasting prices on a number of items at various dollar stores in Kerrville.  Overall, it seems the best buys are at Big Lots.  Jane mentioned that Walgreens and CVS often have good buys on food items, especially when using coupons.

We also discussed the annual event with the other quilting groups in the county.  Jana has a conflict on Nov 12, so Sat., Jan 21st was proposed as a date for the luncheon.  At the Nov. meeting, we’ll finalize the date and time, the location and cost. Bids are being obtained on food to have the event catered. Don’t forget to make or purchase potholders for the attendance gifts.

Nicki asked members to bring an appliqué needle, thimble and scissors to November’s meeting where she’ll give a program on appliqué.

It was suggested that we have our December meeting (Christmas party) at the library instead of the cottage at UMC.  The library can accommodate the Quilters group on Dec. 12th for this event.

The quilt exhibit at the library was de-briefed.  Susan stated that this was a very successful exhibit for the library, likely drawing the largest audience for an event of this type.  An estimated 270-300 attended the exhibit, many from outside our immediate area (Bandera Co).  About 70% were from Bandera Co, and 30% from outside our county, other parts of TX and outside TX.

Thanks were offered to all who were involved in making the exhibit such a success—those who worked on publicity, quilt display, exhibit fixtures, docents—–Congrats on a great job!!!

The group agreed to have an exhibit next year about the same time of year and made the following recommendations for changes:

  1. Get signs to place near the street to direct traffic to the library (borrowed from Bandera for this year)
  1. Coordinate the exhibit dates with the statewide quilter shop hop.
  1. Find a new way to provide ‘block history’—perhaps sample blocks with history of each in a binder at the exhibit.
  1. Consider discontinuing refreshments on Fri and Sat mornings as we didn’t have good response to that at this year’s event.
  1. Do a ‘trunk show’ at the school—take a selection of quilts to the school to show and discuss
  1. Consider having an ‘opening night’ event before the opening date of the exhibit.
  1. Select a wide variety of types of quilts to exhibit
  1. Consider making small quilts using a technique that is new to you (the library has more space to display smaller size quilts)
  1. Consider having attendees select a  ‘peoples choice’ quilt and/or various categories.
  1. Consider asking for donations from attendees for tickets for an opportunity to win a donation quilt (benefit to library).
  1. Try to display more quilts at full size rather than folding to show them off to best advantage.
  1. Consider reviewing methods for publicity to get the best coverage, especially reaching out to other quilting groups.

It was suggested that for next year that the three ‘sit and sew’ meeting that are held throughout the year take place a Michele’s store.  Sewing machines are available and she can accommodate the appropriate number of chairs and space for snacks.

Other ideas for next year include using videos of quilting techniques such as those shown on PBS and working on donation quilts.  It was suggested that a committee be formed to determine what organizations should be given donation quilts and using donated ‘Dutch Girl’ blocks to make these quilts.  Edie showed the group a sample of the Dutch Girl blocks that were donated by an exhibit attendee who was clearing out her deceased mother in law’s home and found these blocks as well as some bolts of fabric.  Some of the blocks are basted or pinned and need to be completed with edge stitching to match the other blocks.   The blocks are made with 1930’s vintage fabrics and appliquéd with a blanket stitch.

The following photos were taken during our show and share portion of the meeting.  Keep scrolling to see photos of quilts, blankets and dolls that “The Core” group was shown on Friday, Oct 28th by Dave Edwards.

Edie and Elda's Rosalinda----What a beauty! Hopefully, she'll visit our meetings until she's completed.

Those who meet on Friday mornings at The Core had a special treat on Friday, Oct 28th.   Core patron David Edwards brought in several antique quilts and some antique dolls to display to those of us who were having coffee.  He had overheard Dinah and Edie talking about quilting one morning earlier in the week and offered show them off on that Friday.

Here are the photos of these items.

The colors were still bright even though these quilts made in New Mexico had been stored for some time.

Dave also brought some blankets that were woven from sheeps' wool on the ranch.

Then Dave opened up a package containing DOLLS----and Dinah almost wouldn't let go!!

On Friday, Edie finished the yo-yo project that will grace her baby grand piano. Did you count the yo-yo's ??? Her family will enjoy this for many years.

Medina Quiltfest and October Newsletter

NEXT MEETING:  OCTOBER 17, 2011

PROGRAM:  JANA OSBOURN WILL PRESENT HER YEARLY TEXAS AGRI-LIFE EXTENSION PROGRAM

Refreshments will be brought by everyone in the quilt group.

SEPTEMBER MEETING NOTES

  • We will also discuss and plan for the November 12th event (District meeting) to which the other organizations will be invited.  Plan to bring two potholders which will be table favors.  We’ll plan whether to have a breakfast, brunch or luncheon meeting, whether food will be prepared by members or catered, etc.  We expect attendance of about 40 for this event.
  • Susan requested that we take time to discuss “lessons learned” from our first quilt exhibit, such as:
    • Should this be an annual event?
    • Should we accept and display quilts from non-members of the organization?
    • Can we source enough quilts to display in just one year?
    • What should we do differently?
    • What can we do better?
    • Are there other issues we should address for an exhibit in the future?
    • Lu mentioned that she would not serve as leader of the group next year, since she has served in this capacity for three years.

Susan thanked all the members who have participated in the exhibit.  We’ve had a very good number of visitors (many from out of town) and many compliments about the number, variety and quality of the quilts exhibited.   The following are photos from the Quilt Fest currently at the Medina Community Library:

Tammy showed the quilt made by her foster mother.  Beautiful first-time quilt!

PROGRAM: SIT-N-SEW

Refreshments on your own and we may sit outside if weather permits as the quilt show will be set up in the meeting room.

AUGUST MEETING NOTES

Two guests who asked to be added to the e-mail list:  Sandy and Susan.
August Birthdays:  Tammy, Joyce and Helen

Lots of discussion for the quilt show. Many quilts were brought to be included in the show and Loreta will have a display of her dolls. Members were asked to sign up for demonstrations they will provide. Sample of brochure reviewed by members. Jane brought patchwork name badges as well as a larger one to hang on the window of the library and Donna volunteered to write members names on badges for the show.

Show and Tell:
Special event: Keara came to thank all members for their help and reported on her adventures at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). She participated in two classes; Mixed Media and Fashion Art & Design, and had a wonderful time learning from instructors and from other young artists.

Joyce wore her cheerful necklace and ear rings made from yoyo’s.

Nicki brought her “Tammy Made Me Do It” quilt made as a wedding gift after much encouragement and mentoring (aka nagging) by Tammy.

Tammy had a table runner made from free pattern available at www.Quiltbug.com.

Edie brought back her “Santorini Star” quilt (our Block of the Month from 2010, pattern available at www.BOMquilts.com) to show the final product with prairie point border.

Edie also brought a T-shirt quilt made for her sister-in-law from Spurs T-shirts.

Loreta brought her chenille dolls—wonderful soft and cuddly and baby-safe. Makes you want to go find that old chenille bed spread and see if it has useful life left afterall.

Program:
Donna presented a hands-on program on a recycle use for old t shirts. Amidst lots of laughter, members were able to complete bright boa’s (or tube top’s for the daring) or sashes to go over skirts or jeans. Some cutting but no sewing required.
